Dataset vs. LINQ to SQL Classes

This short article is to compare between how to use Dataset to populate DataGridView with parameter and how to use LINQ to SQL Class to populate DataGridView with parameter.

Create a Winform with 1 Textbox named txtSearch, 1 Button named btnSearch and 1 DataGridView named DataGridView1.

How to use Dataset to populate DataGridView

Now add the Dataset by Right click the Project -> Add -> New Item…

Choose Data from Categories and Dataset from Templates.

Dataset

Right click on Dataset page then choose Add -> TableAdapter…

DSQuery

Create a Database Connection and click Next till see the TableAdapter Configuration Wizard dialog then select Use SQL Statements.

TableAdapter

Let’s search for AccountNumber for this example. So the SQL statement will be:

SELECT CustomerID, TerritoryID, AccountNumber, CustomerType, rowguid, ModifiedDate FROM Sales.Customer WHERE (AccountNumber = @AccNo)

DSQueryStatement

The DataAdapter will be created.

TableAdapterGet

The last part is to add the code to the click event of Search Button.

privatevoid btnSearch_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

{

  DataTable dt;

  dsCustomersTableAdapters.CustomerTableAdapter ta = new

  WinFormDatasetLINQ.dsCustomersTableAdapters.CustomerTableAdapter();

  dt = ta.GetData(txtSearch.Text);

  dataGridView1.DataSource = dt;

}

How to use LINQ to SQL Class to populate DataGridView

Now add the Dataset by Right click the Project -> Add -> New Item…

Choose Data from Categories and LINQ to SQL Classes from Templates.

LINQSQL

Drag the Customer (Sales) Table from the Server Explorer to LINQ to SQL Classes page.

LINQTable

Add the code to the click event of Search Button.

privatevoid btnSearch_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

{

  DataClassesCustomerDataContext dc = newDataClassesCustomerDataContext();

  var varCustomer = from cust in dc.Customers

                    where cust.AccountNumber == txtSearch.Text

                    select cust;

  dataGridView1.DataSource = varCustomer;

}

The key point is what would happen if I want to query the Customer Table with a different parameter for say, CustomerType?

For Dataset the developers will need to add another TableAdapter.

For LINQ to SQL Classes the developers can make use of the DataContext by changing the code like this:

var varCustomer = from cust in dc.Customers

                  where cust.CustomerType == txtSearch.Text

                  select cust;

Hence, I found LINQ is more flexible as compared to Dataset for query.
