ASP.NET MVC4 Web API routing

By the default, when you create Web API out of the box of Visual Studio 2012. You will get a Values controller by ValuesController.cs. Below is the default content.

public class ValuesController : ApiController

  // GET api/values

  public IEnumerable<string> Get()

    return new string[] { “value1”, “value2” };

  // GET api/values/5

  public string Get(int id)

    return “value”;

  // POST api/values

  public void Post([FromBody]string value)

  // PUT api/values/5

  public void Put(int id, Book value)

  // DELETE api/values/5

  public void Delete(int id)

What happen if I want to add a method in the class name GetMore like the one below.

public void GetMore()

  string More = “More”;

If you add the above then the whole page will break and not running.

In order to make it run I add the additional code in WebApiConfig.cs under the Register method.

         name: “DefaultApi1”,

         routeTemplate: “api/values/{action}/”,

   defaults: new { controller = “values”, action = “get”, id = RouteParameter.Optional }
