How to delete node in XML using XElement C#

This article is showing you how to delete a node using XElement.

This article is extended from the Write XML Tree to XML file (LINQ to XML) with sub child (https://chanmingman.wordpress.com/2014/10/24/write-xml-tree-to-xml-file-linq-to-xml-with-sub-child/).

In previous article we form the XML node using XElement and write them in XML file.

In this article, I first loaded the previous file.

XElement xmlTree2 = XElement.Load(“output.xml”);

Look for the element I want to delete.

XElement child1 = xmlTree2.Element(“Child1”);

Delete it.

child1.Remove();

Rewrite to another file.

xmlTree2.WriteTo(xw);

Below is the complete code.

class Program

{

  static void Main(string[] args)

  {

      WriteXML();

      DeleteNode();

  }

  private static void DeleteNode()

  {

      XmlWriter xw = XmlWriter.Create(“outputnew.xml”);

      XElement xmlTree2 = XElement.Load(“output.xml”);

      XElement child1 = xmlTree2.Element(“Child1”);

      child1.Remove();

      xmlTree2.WriteTo(xw);

      xw.Flush();

      xw.Close();

  }

private static void WriteXML()

  {

      XmlWriter xw = XmlWriter.Create(“output.xml”);

      // Create a tree with a child element.

      XElement xmlTree1 = new XElement(“Root”,

          new XElement(“Child1”, 1)

      );

      // Create an element that is not parented.

    XElement child2 = new XElement(“Child2”, 2);

      // Create a tree and add Child1 and Child2 to it.

      XElement xmlTree2 = new XElement(“Root”,

          xmlTree1.Element(“Child1”),

          child2

      );

      // Compare Child1 identity.

      Console.WriteLine(“Child1 was {0}”,

          xmlTree1.Element(“Child1”) == xmlTree2.Element(“Child1”) ?

          “attached” : “cloned”);

      // Compare Child2 identity.

      Console.WriteLine(“Child2 was {0}”,

          child2 == xmlTree2.Element(“Child2”) ?

          “attached” : “cloned”);

      xmlTree2.WriteTo(xw);

      xw.Flush();

      xw.Close();

  }

}
