Compare Database Schema between Visual Studio Database Project and SQL Database

This blog article shows you how to compare the schema in Visual Studio Database Project and SQL Server Database Objects. First you need to import the database schema into the Database Project, check the link at the bottom. For me, I imported a ScheelDB database. Right click the object you want to edit, in my case Course then select Open.

Add a column, for example, Created with varchanr(50).

Right click the Database project and select Schema Compare…

The Database project will be the source. Select a Target, in this case, the SchoolDB.

Select the Connection and click OK.

Click Compare. You will see the column added.

Click Update to update the database,

You can see from the below image, no error.

You can now check this database using SSMS to see whether the column has added. .
